Jump Rope Echo: Copy the Pattern
The teacher or a student leader jumps an 8-count pattern with a jump rope and everyone answers by repeating it like an echo. Students work on rhythm, movement memory, and a repertoire of basic single-rope jumps.
How to play
- Each student has a rope, faces the teacher, and stands two arm lengths apart; check that the handles reach the armpits when standing on the middle (2 min).
- Review four basic jumps: two-foot bounce, jogging step, forward-back scissors, and side-to-side skier (3 min).
- Simple echo: the teacher jumps 8 counts of one jump and the class repeats it right after; 6 different patterns (3 min).
- Combo echo: 4 counts of one jump and 4 of another; the class listens to the music to start together (4 min).
- Five student volunteers take turns as leader and create their own 8-count pattern (4 min).
- Wrap-up: a final 32-count routine with the class's best ideas, everyone together (2 min).
Rules
- Wait for the leader to finish before you echo.
- Stay two arm lengths from your neighbor so ropes don't hit anyone.
- If you get tangled, step out, straighten the rope, and jump back in on the next count of 1.
- Land on the balls of your feet with knees slightly bent.
Variations
Easier
Echo without a rope using imaginary wrist turns, or hold the folded rope in one hand and swing it to the side.
Standard
8-count patterns using two kinds of jumps.
Harder
16-count patterns that include arm crosses or backward turns.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: echo the pattern seated, swinging the rope at the side of the body with the arms.
- Hearing impairment: the leader shows the counts with raised fingers.
- Fitness level: students who tire can echo at half speed, one jump every two counts.
Learning goals
- Perform basic single-rope jumps with a steady rhythm.
- Memorize and reproduce short movement patterns.
- Create their own patterns and lead the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- individual jump ropes: 26
- music
Teacher tip
Pick music around 120 beats per minute; anything faster throws the class off. If lots of students tangle, echo first without the rope and then with it.
