Jump and Clap Challenge
A vertical jump challenge where each student tries to clap as many times as possible while in the air and land on their feet with control. Students work on driving upward, hang time, and arm coordination, with no measuring tape needed.
How to play
- Place 4 thin mats on the floor and chalk or tape an X in the center of each one; form groups of 6 per mat (2 min).
- Demo: knees bent, arms back, explode upward, clap quickly in front of the chest, and land on the X with bent knees (1 min).
- Each student jumps 3 times per turn; one teammate counts claps out loud and another checks for a balanced landing on the X (4 min).
- Scoring: each clap is worth 1 point and a steady landing adds 1 bonus point; the group adds up each student's best jump (part of the round).
- Variation round: clap behind the back or touch the knees in the air; each student picks one (3 min).
- Group tally and question: what do your arms do before takeoff? (2 min).
Rules
- Jump only on the mat and one person at a time.
- Land on both feet without turning in the air.
- Teammates wait one meter away from the mat.
- A landing with hands on the floor does not earn the bonus point.
Variations
Easier
Count just one clap and allow a small step on landing.
Standard
As many claps as possible in the air, with a steady landing on the X.
Harder
Clap in front, behind, and in front again in a single jump.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: do the challenge seated by tossing a beanbag up and counting claps before catching it.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: the counter holds up fingers instead of calling out the number.
- Fitness or skill level: strong jumpers take off with no arm swing; beginners may use a small bounce first.
Learning goals
- Jump vertically with explosive power.
- Coordinate the arms during the flight phase.
- Land safely and with control.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 4
- chalk: 4
Teacher tip
This works well on rainy days in a small space. If someone lands stiff or falls backward, cut back on the claps and ask for a perfect landing first.
