Juggler's Walk: Scarf Obstacle Path
Students travel through a course of cones, ropes, and hoops while keeping one, two, or three juggling scarves in the air. They build coordination between eyes, hands, and feet, and the ability to handle two tasks at once.
How to play
- Set up three parallel 50-foot lanes: a cone zigzag, a long rope on the ground to walk along, and a line of hoops to step into (3 min).
- Warm up in place with two scarves: toss with alternating hands for 30 seconds and rest 15, three times (2 min).
- First round walking each lane with one scarf; if it drops, pick it up and keep going from that spot (4 min).
- Second round with two scarves at a normal pace; on the rope lane students may slow down (5 min).
- Third round is free choice: each student picks the number of scarves and the lane, counts drops along the way, and tries to lower that number (4 min).
- Share out: which lane was hardest and why; put equipment away lane by lane (2 min).
Rules
- Walk, don't run, and start only when the student ahead is halfway down the lane.
- Eyes stay on the scarves while you glance at the ground; don't stare only at your feet.
- When picking up a dropped scarf, raise a hand to warn the student behind you.
- Return to the start outside the lanes.
Variations
Easier
Do the course with only one scarf and skip the rope lane.
Standard
Three lanes with two scarves plus one free-choice round.
Harder
Do the lanes with a three-scarf cascade, or walk backward through the cone lane.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: travel the cone lane, made wider, in a wheelchair with one scarf.
- Visual impairment: replace the rope with a thick chalk line and pair the student with a sighted guide.
- Skill level: students who struggle stay in round one with one scarf until they finish a lane with no drops.
Learning goals
- Keep control of the scarves while walking.
- Split attention between the objects and the course.
- Track personal improvement by counting drops.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling scarves: 75
- cones: 12
- long rope: 1
- hoops: 10
Teacher tip
The rope lane is the hardest, so if it backs up, let students skip it. Put the start of all three lanes on the same side so you can see the whole class at a glance.
