Jug Scoops: Catch and Fling the Sock Ball
Using water jugs cut into scoops, students throw and catch a sock ball, first in pairs, then in a passing game to an end zone. It echoes the Basque pelota cesta and builds catching with an implement.
How to play
- Intro: the jug, cut by the teacher, works as a scoop; hold it by the handle (2 min).
- Pairs 4 m apart: throw with the jug, catch with the jug (6 min).
- Passes at varying distances, catching overhead and at knee height (6 min).
- 5v5 passing game: the team scores when a player catches inside the end zone marked with cones; no contact, no walking with the ball (13 min).
- Debrief: what wrist angle makes the ball fly straight (3 min).
Rules
- Only the jug touches the ball; if it drops, pick it up by hand and place it in the jug.
- With the ball in the jug, take no more than three steps.
- Defend by intercepting, without touching an opponent or their jug.
- Never swing a jug near someone's face.
Variations
Easier
Bigger ball and passes at 3 m.
Standard
Passes at 4-6 m and 5v5 game.
Harder
Catch only with the non-dominant hand, and the scoring zone moves every 3 minutes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: their own zone where nobody can intercept, passing from the wheelchair.
- Low vision: sock ball with a bell and a partner who calls before throwing.
- Wrist injury: catches holding the jug with both hands.
Learning goals
- Catch and throw with a homemade implement.
- Get open to receive in the scoring zone.
- Learn about an implement inspired by Basque pelota.

Teacher tip
Cut the 1-gallon jugs diagonally below the handle with a box cutter yourself and tape the edge. Each student labels theirs. Common mistake: throwing with a stiff arm; ask for a wrist snap.
