Judo Stand-to-Ground: Off-Balance to Pin
A judo stand-to-ground transition drill: after an off-balance and a controlled fall, tori must move without losing contact into a side pin or a top control. Students work on keeping the match flowing, controlling body weight, and escapes.
How to play
- Pairs of similar weight on the mats. Review two pins: cross side control and side control with the arm under the head (4 min).
- Assisted fall (3 min): uke, standing in grips, sits down and rolls back under control when tori pushes gently toward the heel. Tori follows, holding the sleeve. 6 per role.
- Transition (5 min): right after the fall, tori drops a knee next to uke and settles into one of the two pins before a count of three. 6 per role.
- Transition with escape (5 min): uke stops cooperating on the ground and has 20 seconds to escape to hands and knees or slip a leg free. Tori scores by holding for 20 seconds; uke scores by escaping.
- Rotate every 4 tries with the next pair, keeping similar weight.
- Wrap-up (3 min): each student says what made them lose control during the transition.
Rules
- Uke sits and rolls; there are no standing throws.
- No joint locks, chokes, or pressure on the face.
- Two taps on the partner or the mat mean let go immediately.
- Tori never drops full body weight onto uke's chest.
Variations
Easier
Uke starts lying down and tori only works the entry into the pin.
Standard
Assisted fall, transition, and 20-second escape.
Harder
Uke may choose to roll either way and tori must adjust.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work from the ground as uke or as a coach timing the 20 seconds.
- Hearing impairment: the stop signal is two visible taps on the shoulder, and the teacher uses hand signals for start and finish.
- Lower fitness: 10-second escapes and more rest between turns.
Learning goals
- Link a fall to a pin without losing contact.
- Control body weight on a partner safely.
- Apply basic escapes from a pin.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 30
Teacher tip
The most common error is tori standing and watching after the fall: insist the knee hits the mat at the same time as uke's back. Make sure there is room to roll.
