Judo Grip Fighting Game
A standing partner judo game where nobody gets thrown: you win the round by getting your full sleeve-and-lapel grip and holding it for 3 seconds. Students work on stance, footwork, and quick decisions against an opponent.
How to play
- Pairs of similar size in judo jackets or heavy sweatshirts, in 10 x 10 ft squares. Bow and review the stance (2 min).
- Basic grip: lead hand on the lapel at chest height, other hand on the sleeve below the elbow; 10 unopposed reps (2 min).
- Game 1: both try to grab and hold the other's sleeve for 3 seconds; the opponent breaks it with a short downward snap. 30-second rounds (3 min).
- Game 2: get sleeve and lapel at the same time for 3 seconds; the defender breaks grips and moves but stays in the square. Each full grip scores 1 point (4 min).
- Three 1-minute rounds against different partners, rotating right, then discuss which grip is easiest to break (4 min).
Rules
- No throws or sweeps: if someone loses balance, the partner lets go and play stops.
- No grabbing the neck, hair, or fingers, and no fingers inside the sleeve.
- Break grips with short snaps, never by twisting the wrist.
Variations
Easier
Only the sleeve grip counts, and the defender has to stay in place.
Standard
Full sleeve-and-lapel grip held for 3 seconds, with free movement inside the square.
Harder
The grip only scores if you then pull your partner slightly off balance forward without letting go, in 20-second rounds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated face to face, using sleeve grips only.
- Visual impairment: start with hands already on the opponent's sleeve, as in adapted judo.
- Lower fitness or shyness: start as the judge counting 3 seconds, then join with a trusted partner.
Learning goals
- Identify and perform the basic sleeve-and-lapel grip.
- Break an opponent's grip with safe actions and move to regain the advantage.
- Make quick decisions in response to an opponent while following the rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 24
- judo gis: 26
Teacher tip
If you don't have judo gis, use old heavy cotton sweatshirts; thin T-shirts tear. Watch for students pulling with a locked arm: the power should come from the legs.
