Judo Grip Fighting Duels
Standing duels where each pair competes only to win the judo grip, sleeve and lapel, with no throws or takedowns. Students work on grip fighting, posture control, grip strength, and respect for their partner in a safe combative activity.
How to play
- Lay out the mats and pair students of similar height and weight in judo gis or sturdy sweatshirts; standing bow to begin (2 min).
- Demo: proper grip with one hand on the sleeve at elbow level and the other on the lapel at collarbone level; everyone practices with no resistance (3 min).
- Drill: one partner tries to get the grip while the other only defends by clearing hands away, without gripping; 30 seconds and switch, 4 times (4 min).
- 1-minute duels: score a point by holding sleeve and lapel for 3 seconds; then both let go and restart (8 min).
- Rotate partners every 2 duels and close by discussing which hand strategy worked best (3 min).
Rules
- No throws, sweeps, hard pushing, or pulling on the neck.
- No gripping inside the sleeve or grabbing an opponent's fingers.
- Anyone can call 'Matte!' and the action stops immediately.
- Short nails and no rings, watches, or earrings.
Variations
Easier
Holding a single grip (sleeve or lapel) for 3 seconds scores.
Standard
A point for holding sleeve and lapel for 3 seconds.
Harder
After winning the grip, create a controlled off-balance without a takedown to score 2.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: duel seated face to face with the same grip goal.
- Visual impairment: start with hands in contact, and the teacher calls start and stop out loud.
- Fitness or strength level: pair by ability and shorten duels to 40 seconds.
Learning goals
- Win and hold an effective judo grip.
- Defend against an opponent's grip with footwork and hands.
- Follow safety and respect rules in combatives.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tatami mats: 30
- judo gis: 26
Teacher tip
Students tend to lock their arms and hunch over; cue a straight back and moving feet. Make sure no one twists a partner's fingers.
