Judged AMRAP: Only Clean Reps Count
In pairs, one student does an 8-minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) while the other judges against clear movement standards; then they switch. The goal is to see that an AMRAP without standards rewards sloppy form, and to learn to keep quality under fatigue.
How to play
- Introduce the AMRAP: 10 squats, 8 push-ups, 10 alternating lunges and a 10-meter shuttle between cones. Explain each standard (hip below knee, chest within a fist of the floor, back knee brushes the floor) (4 min).
- Judge practice: the teacher shows good and bad reps and pairs decide which ones count (3 min).
- First 8-minute AMRAP: the athlete works and the judge counts only clean reps, calling 'no rep' when the standard is missed (8 min).
- Active rest: the pair writes down rounds, no-reps and Borg, then they switch roles (3 min).
- Second 8-minute AMRAP with roles reversed (8 min).
- Discussion: when did the no-reps start, and which exercise breaks down first with fatigue (4 min).
Rules
- The judge calls a no-rep calmly and only once; no arguing or pressuring.
- After three no-reps in a row, the athlete slows down or switches to the easier version of the exercise.
- On the shuttle, touch the cone with the hand, without stopping dead or running into other pairs.
- Students compare results with themselves; there is no overall ranking.
Variations
Easier
6-minute AMRAP with incline push-ups and box squats.
Standard
Two judged 8-minute AMRAPs with defined movement standards.
Harder
10-minute AMRAP adding 5 burpees per round with their own standard.
Adaptations
- Blind or low vision: the judge gives the correction out loud and a partner guides the shuttle.
- Limited mobility: the athlete does rounds of medicine ball chest presses, trunk rotations and a wheelchair shuttle, with adapted standards.
- Assessment anxiety: the student judges first to learn the standards well before being judged.
Learning goals
- Apply movement standards to keep form quality under fatigue.
- Take on the judge role responsibly and respectfully.
- Analyze how fatigue erodes technique and how to pace an AMRAP.
Equipment for a class of 25

- cones: 30

Teacher tip
Large printed standards next to each area help first-time judges a lot. Watch the judges closely: the way they communicate says a lot about the class climate.
