Jog-Only Basketball with Heart Rate Checks
A basketball game with one key rule: everyone must keep moving at a jog at all times, with no sprinting and no standing still. The game turns into steady, intense aerobic work, and between games students check whether their heart rate is in the target zone.
How to play
- Form 5 teams of 5 in pinnies. At each of the two baskets, two teams play 4-on-4 half court and the fifth team serves as referees and timekeepers (2 min).
- Special rules: no sprinting and no standing still for more than 3 seconds, with or without the ball. A violation means a turnover.
- Referees enforce the special rules and keep time; all other rules follow school basketball with no contact.
- Games last 4 min. Afterward, everyone takes a 15-second pulse count and multiplies by 4; the target zone is roughly 130 to 160 beats per minute (1 min).
- Rotation: the referee team comes on and the team that has been playing longest comes off. Play about 4 rounds (about 20 min).
- Two-minute wrap-up: each student shares how many rounds they spent in the zone and whether the jog-only rule raised or lowered their heart rate compared with a regular game.
Rules
- No sprinting and no standing still: jogging is required on defense too.
- No contact: personal fouls give the ball to the other team.
- Referees raise a hand and clearly call out the violation.
Variations
Easier
Allow walking on offense and require jogging only in transition.
Standard
Play 4-on-4 half court with mandatory jogging and a heart rate check after every game.
Harder
Play 5-on-5 full court with the same rule and 6-minute games.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair plays with an adapted constant-motion rule, and their baskets count double.
- Shy students: start as a referee to learn the rules before playing.
- Lower fitness: let the student's team sub more often without stopping play.
Learning goals
- Sustain aerobic intensity continuously during a sport game.
- Take a pulse and check whether it falls in the planned training zone.
- Make game decisions without relying on top speed.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 2
- pinnies: 20
- stopwatches: 2
Teacher tip
At first students forget the no-standing rule, especially on defense, so referees need to be strict.
