Irish Jig Basics
Students learn the basic steps of Irish dance, with an upright torso and still arms, and combine them into a short routine in rows. Students work on leg coordination, posture control, and the triple-time rhythm of Celtic music.
How to play
- Arrange students in 4 staggered rows with cones as markers. Spend 2 minutes on posture: arms tight at the sides, straight back, and weight on the balls of the feet.
- "1-2-3" step (5 minutes): small hops in place switching feet to "one-two-three," first without music and then with a slow jig.
- Toes and heels (4 minutes): touch the toe forward, the heel forward, and the foot crossed, with a small hop between each touch.
- Side travel (4 minutes): seven "1-2-3" steps to the right and back, keeping the row lined up with the cones.
- In groups of 6, link the three steps into a 32-count routine and rehearse it (5 minutes).
- Quick showcase (2 minutes): two groups dance at a time while the rest clap the beat.
Rules
- Keep hops low and land on the balls of the feet, without slamming the heels.
- Keep an arm's length in every direction.
- Anyone who gets tired can clap the beat and rejoin later.
- Dance in sneakers; never barefoot outdoors.
Variations
Easier
Steps without hops, just weight shifts, with slow music.
Standard
Three basic steps combined into a 32-count routine.
Harder
Add turns, row changes, and a fast jig tempo.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: work the rhythm with arms and toe taps from a chair.
- Shyness: dance in the back row and in a big group until confident.
- Higher fitness: keep the arms completely still and raise the height of the hops.
Learning goals
- Coordinate quick footwork while keeping the torso and arms still.
- Follow the triple-time rhythm of a jig.
- Learn about a traditional Irish dance and its key features.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
It is very demanding on the calves, so alternate dance blocks with explanations. The typical mistake is swinging the arms; have students hold their pant seams.
