Inverted Row Test and Leveled Workout Prescription
Students measure their upper-body pulling endurance with max inverted rows on a low bar and, based on the result, assign themselves a training level. The activity strengthens the back muscles, which are often neglected in workout programs.
How to play
- Set up 4-6 sturdy low bars at hip height with a mat underneath. Groups of 4-5 per bar (3 min).
- Demonstrate: body straight from heels to shoulders, shoulder-width grip, and chest pulled up to the bar (2 min).
- Test in turns: reps at 1 second up and 1 second down until the body bends or the chest no longer reaches the bar. One partner counts and another checks form (8 min).
- Assign a level: 0-5 reps, bent-knee rows; 6-12, straight-leg rows; 13 or more, rows with a 2-second pause at the top (2 min).
- Practice at your level: 3 sets of 8 reps with 60 s of rest, rotating at the bar (7 min).
Rules
- Check the bar before every turn, and nobody hangs from it unless it is secure.
- Only reps with a straight body count.
- Let go only when your feet are planted, never mid-rep.
Variations
Easier
Raise the bar for a more upright body angle in the test and practice.
Standard
Test with the bar at hip height and practice at three levels.
Harder
Feet-elevated rows on a bench for the top level.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated band rows using the same level criteria.
- Shyness or low confidence: test in a small group without announcing results.
- Low fitness level: if no reps are possible, start at the high-bar level.
Learning goals
- Measure upper-body pulling endurance.
- Choose an exercise level that matches the test result.
- Include back muscles in a balanced program.

Teacher tip
Hips usually sag, so cue students to squeeze their glutes and abs. If there are no low bars, well-secured low parallel bars work.
