Invasion Game with Changing Rules
A 5-on-5 invasion game where every 4 minutes the teacher draws a card that changes one rule: no dribbling, goals only after a pass from the wing, required zone defense and more. Students see how each rule changes the tactics and must quickly adapt how they attack and defend.
How to play
- Set up a team handball court with two goals and 5 cards with rules written on them. Make 4 teams of 6 in pinnies; two teams play 5 plus a goalie while the others wait as observers (3 min).
- Play a 4-minute opening game with basic school team handball rules.
- Draw the first card, for example "no dribbling." Give each team 30 seconds to plan how to attack under the new rule, then play 4 more minutes.
- Continue with a new card every 4 minutes: "goals only after a pass from the wing," "required zone defense," "5 seconds max per player." Teams rotate with the observers after each card.
- Finish with a 3-minute discussion: which rule helped the offense most and which helped the defense? Why?
Rules
- Each new rule is added to or replaces the previous one, as the card says.
- The goal area and the ban on rough contact always stay in place.
- Observers write down one advantage and one challenge for each rule.
- Arguments are settled by team captains, taking turns.
Variations
Easier
Use only three cards and allow free dribbling throughout.
Standard
5-on-5 with a new card every 4 minutes.
Harder
Before the last round, each team writes a rule card for the opposing team.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play goalie on a smaller goal or take the role of reading and explaining each card.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing or students with autism: show each rule in writing and with a picture before play resumes.
- Lower fitness levels: rotate with the observers at every card change.
Learning goals
- Adapt team tactics to new rules.
- Analyze how a rule changes the balance between offense and defense.
- Reach quick agreements as a team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- team handballs: 2
- goals: 2
- pinnies: 24
- cards: 5
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards and put them in order of difficulty. This is a great way to close an invasion games unit because students must apply everything they have learned.
