Instrument Families Sorting Relay

In a relay, each team collects picture cards of instruments and sorts them into hoops by family: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. In part two, a short sound clip plays and runners race to bring back the matching card.

How to play

  1. Make 5 teams of 5 lined up behind a cone. In front of each line set 4 hoops with signs: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. About 50 feet away, place a face-down pile of 16 cards per team (3 min).
  2. On the whistle, the first student in each line runs, grabs one card, runs back, and drops it in the hoop they think is right, then high-fives the next runner.
  3. Teammates may move one misplaced card, but only when it is their turn, before they run.
  4. When a team has brought back all 16 cards, it sits down. The teacher checks: one point per card in the right family. Shuffle and repeat (6 min).
  5. Part two: all cards face up in the middle. A short recording of one instrument plays and the first student in each line runs for that card; a correct card earns a point for the team (5 min).
  6. To finish, each team pantomimes playing one instrument from each family while the others guess (1 min).
