Instant New Ball: Concede and Go
A 5v5 game where, after every score, a new ball is rolled straight to the team that conceded. It trains the quick switch from attack to defense and back, with no time to celebrate.
How to play
- Setup: two 25 × 15 m fields with an end zone and a bin of balls at midfield on each sideline; one student is the feeder (3 min).
- Normal 5v5 with a restart from the center after each score (5 min).
- Instant ball rule: after a score, the feeder rolls a new ball to the team that conceded and play continues; the used ball goes out (6 min).
- Pause with questions: what did you do right after scoring? Who should get back on defense first? (3 min).
- Game with a bonus: a score within five seconds of the new ball counts double (6 min).
- Wrap-up: which sports have a quick restart after a goal, and how do you defend it? (2 min).
Rules
- The feeder rolls the ball along the ground, never throws it in the air.
- Score by catching a pass inside the end zone; no walking with the ball.
- No contact: interceptions only.
- The scoring ball is left in the end zone and the feeder collects it.
Variations
Easier
The feeder waits two seconds before rolling the new ball.
Standard
New ball right after every score.
Harder
The new ball can go to any of the five on the conceding team and the feeder chooses who.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the feeder raises an arm before rolling the ball.
- Limited mobility: is the permanent feeder and also decides when each ball goes in.
- Students with less fitness: teams make free substitutions from the sideline every minute.
Learning goals
- React quickly when switching from attack to defense.
- Take advantage of the opponent's disorder after a score.
- Stay focused without long celebrations.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 12
- pinnies: 15
- cones: 16
- bins: 2
Teacher tip
Rotate the feeder every two minutes so everyone plays. Typical mistake: the scoring team stays celebrating in the end zone; the opponent's first quick score teaches it better than any explanation.
