Inclusive Mini Basketball with a Protected Zone
Mini basketball with inclusive rules: each team has a protected zone near the basket where one player receives without defense and can score several ways, and the ball must go through three players before a shot. Students practice teamwork, passing, and inclusion.
How to play
- Use two courts with three teams of 4 on each, in colored pinnies. Next to each basket, a 2 m (6 ft) semicircle marked with cones is the protected zone.
- Each team names a zone player who rotates every 3 minutes; a classmate with limited mobility may stay longer. Only that player enters the zone, and no defender may step in.
- Play 4 on 4 for 3 minutes while the third team referees, counting passes and checking the rules.
- Scoring: regular basket, 2. From the zone: backboard, 1; basket, 3; or 1 point for a shot into a hoop held at waist height by a teammate. Before any shot, three passes to different players.
- Every 3 minutes the referee team replaces the lowest-scoring team. Play about 7 segments and finish with 2 minutes discussing the rules.
Rules
- Nobody enters the protected zone except its player.
- Defend at arm's length with no contact.
- No stripping the ball: only pass interceptions.
- The hoop is held still and out of players' paths.
Variations
Easier
3 on 3 with no pass defense in the first segments.
Standard
4 on 4 with a protected zone, three passes, and adapted scoring.
Harder
Every teammate must touch the ball before a shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student who uses a wheelchair can be the permanent zone player, and the team earns a bonus point for each pass they receive.
- Autism or shyness: refereeing passes or holding the hoop allows lower-pressure participation at first.
- Skill level: advanced players shoot only with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Apply rules that give everyone an equal chance.
- Use passing to include every teammate.
- Value each player's contribution to the team.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 2
- pinnies: 24
- cones: 16
- hoops: 4
Teacher tip
The key rule is no stripping the ball; without it the game goes back to the fastest kids. Ask at the end which rule they would change, because students often suggest great improvements.
