Imagined Place Improv: Building a Set Without Scenery
Together the group builds an imaginary place (a market, a train station, a kitchen) using only physical actions: each person enters, uses something in the space and leaves it in place for the next ones. Students work on spatial memory, gesture precision and group consistency.
How to play
- Demo: the teacher walks into an empty space, opens an imaginary door, hangs up a coat and leaves; a volunteer repeats it using the same things and adds one more (3 min).
- Groups of six: a place is announced and members enter one at a time, using the objects already created and adding a new one without talking (6 min).
- Second round: everyone inside at once, living in the place with everyday actions and without walking through objects already placed (5 min).
- Each group shows its place to the rest, who must guess it and point out where three objects were (6 min).
Rules
- What has been placed is respected: nobody walks through an invisible table or wall.
- Work without words and without touching classmates.
- Every action has a clear beginning and end.
Variations
Easier
The place is the classroom itself and only small objects are added.
Standard
Place announced by the teacher, built in turns and then all together.
Harder
The group picks the place secretly and it must be recognized without clues.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: a classmate describes where the placed objects are before they enter.
- Limited mobility: the objects they create are placed within reach and the group uses them at that height.
- Autism: is offered the first entrance, with a familiar and structured place.
Learning goals
- Represent objects and spaces with precise, consistent gestures.
- Keep the group's shared spatial memory.
- Listen to and build on other people's offers.
Teacher tip
If someone walks through an object, freeze the scene and ask the group what just happened: that is usually enough to sharpen everyone's precision.
