I Declare War: Country Circle Freeze Game
A classic playground game in which every player is a country inside a big chalk circle. When war is declared on a country, that player races to the center and yells 'Stop!', then guesses how many steps it takes to reach a rival and win some land. It builds reaction and distance estimation.
How to play
- Chalk 4 circles 4 m (13 ft) across, each split into 6 slices like a pie; each player writes a country of their choice in one slice (groups of 6, one of 7) (3 min).
- Everyone stands in their country. One player says, 'I declare war on my worst enemy, which is... France!' Everyone runs out of the circle except France.
- France runs to the center, steps on it and yells 'Stop!': everyone freezes where they are.
- From the center, France picks a rival and says how many giant steps it will take to tag them, then takes them in a straight line.
- If France guesses right and tags the rival, France wins a slice of that country by chalking a line inside it; if not, the rival wins a slice from France.
- The player who lost land declares the next war. After 8 minutes, groups switch circles and start with new countries.
Rules
- When you hear your country, go to the center; everyone else runs without pushing.
- After 'Stop!' nobody moves; anyone who moves gives up a slice.
- Steps go in a straight line, with no jumping.
- Nobody is out: if your country disappears, redraw it at the edge.
Variations
Easier
Guess in normal steps and accept an answer that is off by one step.
Standard
Guess in giant steps and win land only with an exact guess.
Harder
The rival picks the step type (giant, baby or frog hop) before the guess.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wheelchair user guesses in wheel pushes, and runners may not go farther than 6 m (20 ft).
- Hearing impairment: point to the country under attack, and pair 'Stop!' with arms crossed overhead.
- Fitness level: slower runners start one step closer to the edge.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a verbal signal.
- Estimate distances in steps and check them.
- Take turns and follow the rules of a classic playground game.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 8
Teacher tip
Let students choose real countries and use it to talk about where each one is. Set a running limit of about 8 m (26 ft) using court lines so the distances stay reasonable.
