How to play
- Groups of 8 in a tight circle. Each person takes the right hand of someone not next to them and the left hand of a different person (2 min).
- Untangle by stepping over or ducking under arms until you form one or more circles (4 min).
- Quick debrief: who suggested ideas, how decisions were made, what got the group stuck (2 min).
- Second knot with an outside "engineer" who can only guide by voice, no touching (4 min).
- Giant knot with two groups together (3 min).
Rules
- You may rotate your hand inside the grip, but never twist wrists or elbows.
- Move slowly when stepping over or ducking under.
- Anyone can say "stop": let go for a moment, then re-grip the same way.
- Ending in two circles also counts.
Variations
Easier
Groups of 6.
Standard
Groups of 8 with an engineer in round two.
Harder
Groups of 10, no talking.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users or limited mobility: act as engineer or join the end of the knot with a short rope.
- Wrist problems: hold a scarf instead of a hand so you can rotate without strain.
- Students who avoid contact: use scarves in both hands.
Learning goals
- Solve a spatial problem as a group.
- Listen and share leadership.
- Stay calm when frustrated.
Teacher tip
If a knot has no solution after 4 minutes, allow "one release" of a pair of hands. Make the groups yourself to mix students.
