Hot Potato Keep-Away Tag
A team ball tag game: the attacking team passes a foam ball, and only the player holding it can be tagged, so they need to pass before the tag. Students practice passing and catching on the move, getting open, and team defense.
How to play
- Make 4 teams of 6 and set up 2 fields of 15 x 15 m with two teams on each. One team per field wears pinnies and defends (2 min).
- The attacking team has the foam ball. Players can run with it, but the ball carrier is the only one who can be tagged.
- Defenders try to tag the ball carrier. If they tag before the pass, they score a point and the ball restarts from a corner.
- Attackers count consecutive passes out loud; at 8 passes without a tag, they score a point and keep going.
- If the ball hits the ground, any attacker picks it up and play continues without resetting the count.
- Switch roles every 2 minutes. After 6 turns, the team with the most combined attacking and defending points wins.
Rules
- Only the player holding the ball can be tagged.
- Pass at chest or waist height; no throws at anyone's face.
- Defenders may not rip the ball away; they only tag the carrier.
- No passing straight back to the player who just passed to you.
Variations
Easier
Five consecutive passes score a point and defenders must speed-walk.
Standard
Eight consecutive passes to score and defenders run.
Harder
The ball carrier may take no more than three steps holding the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is a fixed passer in a hoop safe zone where they can't be tagged but their passes count.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell and call the receiver's name before each pass.
- Fitness level: students with lower fitness can defend a zone instead of chasing all over the field.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch on the move under pressure.
- Get open to give teammates passing options.
- Defend as a team by pressuring the ball carrier.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 2
- pinnies: 12
Teacher tip
If attackers keep running solo with the ball, remind them the carrier is the one in danger. Praise cuts and quick passes more than sprints.
