Hoop Tug and Reach the Cone
Two students grip the same hoop, and each has a cone two steps behind them; the first to touch their cone with their free hand without letting go wins. Students work on balance, controlled pulling, and deciding when to pull or reach.
How to play
- Give each pair a hoop and set two cones 6 feet from the center, one behind each player (2 min).
- Both grip the hoop with one hand in the center and put the other hand behind their back.
- On the signal, they pull to get closer to their cone and tap it with the free hand without releasing the hoop (15 seconds max).
- Each tap scores 1 point and players reset to the center; after 5 duels, switch hands (5 min).
- Every 5 duels, one partner rotates clockwise; at the end, discuss whether pulling hard or waiting for a lapse works better (8 min).
Rules
- Never drop the hoop suddenly; if it is dropped, the point does not count.
- No pushing or touching your partner with the free hand.
- Pairs stay 10 feet apart.
Variations
Easier
Place the cones just one step away.
Standard
Cones two steps away, one-handed play.
Harder
Play on one foot or with cones three steps away on a diagonal.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays seated with the cone on a bench beside them and the partner also seated.
- Visual impairment: use a sound-making object or let them touch the cone first to locate it.
- Fitness level: move the weaker student's cone closer or allow a two-hand grip.
Learning goals
- Keep balance while pulling and reaching.
- Decide when to pull and when to exploit an opponent's lapse.
- Play with indirect contact while respecting a partner.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 13
- cones: 26
Teacher tip
Use sturdy plastic hoops, since thin ones bend. Remind students that dropping the hoop makes a partner fall and never earns a point.
