Hoop Train Cars: Hook On, Hook Off
Each child is a train car inside a hoop, and on tambourine signals the cars hook up into trains of two, four, or the whole class, then split apart again. Kids work on coordinated locomotor movement, listening, and cooperation.
How to play
- Each child steps into a hoop and holds it at waist height: it is their train car. They travel freely around the gym saying "choo-choo" (1 minute).
- One tambourine beat: "Hook up two!" Each car finds another, the back car holds the front hoop, and they keep going together. A shaking tambourine: "Unhook!" and they travel alone again (2 minutes).
- Two beats: "Trains of four!" Two pairs join up. The first child is the engine and chooses the path: straight, curvy, or zigzag (3 minutes).
- A clap: "New engineer!" The last car unhooks, walks to the front, and becomes the new engine. Repeat until everyone has led (3 minutes).
- Set out cones as stations: when a train reaches one, it stops, everyone squats, counts to 3, and starts again.
- Finish with "The longest train in the world!" Everyone hooks on behind you and rides slowly around the gym to the last station (2 minutes).
Rules
- Hold the hoop at your waist, never around your neck.
- The train moves at the pace of its slowest car.
- Do not pull a friend's hoop: move with them.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only trains of two, and you can be the engine for anyone who wants to join.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use trains of two and four with engineer swaps.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each tambourine beat changes how trains move: tiptoes, squatting, slowly backward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child holds the hoop on the lap and leads as the engine.
- Autism: the child stays in the same train with a trusted partner.
- More skilled kids are engines weaving around cones; less skilled kids ride in the middle.
Learning goals
- Move while matching their steps to classmates.
- Respond to different sound signals.
- Take turns as leader and follower.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 20
- tambourine: 1
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Use large hoops so kids fit comfortably, and stack them ahead of time so everyone grabs one without waiting. Sharp turns break trains: teach wide curves.
