Hoop on the Move: Walk Without Dropping It
Students keep a hula hoop spinning at their waist while traveling along harder and harder paths: straight ahead, sideways, zigzag, and lowering and rising. They develop core control, dynamic balance, and coordination between hips and feet.
How to play
- Each student with a hoop on the end line of the court; mark four 30-foot lanes with cones (2 min).
- Review in place: hoop at the waist for 30 seconds rocking front to back, with the left foot forward and then the right (3 min).
- Round 1: walk straight ahead with short steps while keeping the hoop going; if it drops, restart from that spot (3 min).
- Round 2: walk sideways with side steps down and back (3 min).
- Round 3: zigzag through the cones in your lane and, if you want, squat a little and rise again without dropping it (4 min).
- Final challenge: each student writes down how many feet or cones they passed without a drop and tries to beat it once (3 min).
Rules
- Walk with short steps, never run.
- Stay in your lane so you don't bump other hoops.
- If the hoop drops, stop and pick it up before going on.
- Start when the student ahead is past the middle of the lane.
Variations
Easier
Walk in place without traveling, or move just three steps.
Standard
Paths straight ahead, sideways, and in a zigzag.
Harder
Walk backward or turn in place while keeping the hoop at the waist.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: spin the hoop on the arm while traveling the lane in a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: a classmate walks alongside and calls out each cone.
- Skill level: students who can't keep the hoop at the waist may spin it on the arm while walking.
Learning goals
- Keep a hoop spinning while traveling.
- Control the torso and hips along different paths.
- Measure personal improvement on a skill challenge.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hula hoops: 25
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
The hoop drops when students stop moving their hips to take a step, so ask for tiny steps without breaking the rock. Larger, heavier hoops are better for beginners.
