Hoop in the Middle: The Must-Bounce Paddle Rally
A cooperative beach-paddle rally where the ball must bounce inside a hoop placed between the two players. It works on direction and on controlling how hard you hit.
How to play
- Pairs five meters apart with a hoop on the ground in the middle; free rally with one bounce to dial in power (4 min).
- Every shot must bounce inside the hoop; pairs count their best streak out loud (5 min).
- Backhands only; then alternate forehand and backhand (5 min).
- Take one step farther apart and challenge the next pair to beat their best streak (4 min).
- Quick share: what arm adjustment helped hit the hoop (2 min).
Rules
- If the bounce misses the hoop, the streak resets but the rally continues.
- Pairs line up side by side, all facing the same direction, to avoid crossing shots.
- Hit below shoulder height: no smashes in this one.
Variations
Easier
Big hoop or two hoops together, four meters apart.
Standard
One hoop, five meters apart.
Harder
Small hoop or a taped square, with forced forehand-backhand alternation.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the partner says "now" on each hit and the ball has a bell or beeper.
- Limited mobility: play seated at a shorter distance with the hoop moved closer.
- Advanced students: always hit with the non-dominant hand.
Learning goals
- Adjust hitting power to distance.
- Send the ball to a specific spot.
- Work together to extend the rally.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beach paddles: 30
- foam balls: 15
- hoops: 15
Teacher tip
Foam balls barely bounce: if you only have tennis balls, use half the distance. The usual error is hitting hard and long; keep cueing "push, don't whack."
