Hoop-Bound Tail Grab
In pairs, each student stands with both feet inside a hoop and tucks a flag into the back of the waistband as a tail; the goal is to pull the opponent's tail without stepping out of the hoop. The activity builds balance under pressure, dodging with the upper body and fair play.
How to play
- Set hoops out in pairs about 80 cm (30 in) apart so opponents can reach each other with a straight arm; each student steps into a hoop with a flag tucked into the back of the waistband (2 min).
- Duel: on the whistle, each student tries to pull the other's tail for 30 seconds without moving the feet out of the hoop, dodging by twisting, leaning or ducking (3 min of several duels).
- Scoring: pulling a tail is worth 1 point, and stepping out of the hoop gives the opponent 1 point; tails are tucked back in after every duel.
- Rotation: every two duels, students in one row move one hoop to the right to face a new opponent (4 min).
- Stork round: play with only one foot inside the hoop and the other foot raised; putting the second foot down gives the opponent 1 point (4 min).
- Wrap-up: each student adds up their points and shares which dodging trick worked best (2 min).
Rules
- Only the flag may be touched: pushing, grabbing clothes or touching the face is not allowed.
- The tail must hang at least a hand's length out of the waistband and can't be covered with the hands.
- If someone falls, the duel stops and restarts.
- Everyone honestly admits when a foot leaves the hoop.
Variations
Easier
Use bigger hoops or two hoops per student, and skip the stork round.
Standard
Play 30-second duels with both feet in the hoop and rotate opponents.
Harder
Play the whole duel in a squat or on one foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated in a chair or on the floor against an opponent who is also seated, with the tail tucked at the shoulder.
- Autism or shyness: start by playing against the teacher or a trusted partner before rotating.
- Advanced students: duel against two opponents, one on each side, at the same time.
Learning goals
- Keep balance while leaning and twisting without moving the feet.
- Anticipate and dodge an opponent's moves.
- Follow contact rules and keep score honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 26
- flags: 26
Teacher tip
Pair students by similar size and ability. Blow the whistle the first time anyone grabs clothing, because the flag-only rule is what keeps this game safe.
