Homemade Sliders: Core and Legs with Rags and Cardboard
A rag on a smooth floor or a paper plate on carpet works just like the gym's sliding discs. Students test which material slides best on each surface and do a core and lower-body circuit that demands a lot of control.
How to play
- Material test: each pair compares a rag, a paper plate and an old sock on the available floor and chooses the one that slides with the most control (3 min).
- Demo of four exercises: plank with feet sliding to the chest, sliding reverse lunge, hamstring curl from a bridge and lateral sliding adduction (4 min).
- Partner circuit: one works for 40 seconds while the other checks form with a three-point list; then they switch. Four exercises, two rounds (14 min).
- Each pair invents a fifth slider exercise, checks it with the teacher and teaches it to another pair (3 min).
- Clean-up and a quick talk on how to set up this routine at home with whatever is available (1 min).
Rules
- Work only on a clean, dry floor, away from corners, desks or walls.
- Moves are slow and controlled: if the slider gets away from you, shorten the range.
- In the plank, drop the knees if the lower back sags.
Variations
Easier
Short ranges and knees down in the plank.
Standard
Four slider exercises in pairs with form observation.
Harder
Single-leg exercises and a plank sliding both feet out to the sides at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use sliders with the hands from the wheelchair on a table for push, pull and rotation work.
- Knee injury: skip the sliding lunge and do a single-leg glute bridge instead.
- Blind or low vision: work on a mat, which marks the space by touch, and get verbal cues from the observer.
Learning goals
- Improve trunk stability and lower-body control.
- Experiment with everyday materials and choose the best one for each surface.
- Observe and correct a partner's technique using specific criteria.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rags: 15
- paper plates: 30
- timer: 1
- mats: 15
Teacher tip
In a classroom, move the desks aside first; in the gym, paper plates usually work better than rags. Make sure there is no sand on the floor, as it makes the slider stop suddenly.
