Home Workout with Everyday Objects
In groups of four, students design and test a strength circuit using things they have at home: water bottles, a backpack with books, a chair, and a towel. Students build the independence to keep up a fitness plan without a gym or sports equipment.
How to play
- Intro (3 min): six sample stations: backpack squats, chair dips, bottle rows, towel-slide lunges, plank with a book on the back, and chair step-ups.
- Test run (8 min): in groups of 4, each group rotates through the six stations with 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds to switch.
- Design (6 min): each group writes its own 5-exercise routine with household items on a sheet, listing sets, times, and an easier and harder version of each.
- Swap (6 min): each group teaches its routine to another group and they do it together for 2 rounds.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each student writes down which days and what time they would do the routine at home.
Rules
- Safety: chairs go against the wall and backpacks hold no more than 5 books.
- Towel slides only on a smooth floor with nothing around.
- Form comes before speed: if it slips, lighten the load.
- Return the books and empty the bottles at the end.
Variations
Easier
Work 30 seconds per station with half-full bottles and an empty backpack.
Standard
Six 40-second stations and a self-designed 5-exercise routine.
Harder
Work 50 seconds with single-leg or single-arm moves, like chair split squats.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: upper-body stations with bottles, backpack, and towel.
- Students with autism: a card with the station order and a visible timer.
- Lower fitness: pick the easier version of each station and rest 30 seconds.
Learning goals
- Design a strength routine using household items.
- Perform exercises with safe technique and appropriate loads.
- Plan when to do the routine independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- water bottles: 25
- backpacks: 6
- chairs: 12
- towels: 6
- books: 20
Teacher tip
Ask each student to bring two full water bottles and their backpack. The usual mistake is overloading the backpack; check the weight before starting.
