Home Workout Design with Household Items
In groups of three, students design a 15-minute workout to do at home using only everyday items (chairs, towels, water bottles, and backpacks with books) and test it in class. They learn to plan training without needing a gym.
How to play
- Show the items with one idea for each: chair for dips, towel for sliders, bottles as dumbbells, and backpack as added weight (3 min).
- Design (8 min): each group of three writes a 15-minute workout with a warm-up, a four-exercise strength block, and a cool-down, listing times or reps.
- Test (10 min): each group runs a short version of its own workout; one student leads while the other two do it.
- Swap (5 min): each group tries one exercise from another group's workout and leaves a written suggestion.
- Each group updates its card based on what it learned and takes it home to use that week (2 min).
Rules
- Push the chair against the wall and never stand on it.
- The backpack stays under about 10 lb and is worn with both straps.
- The whole workout must fit in a 6 by 6 foot space.
Variations
Easier
Groups pick exercises from a list of twelve that have already been taught.
Standard
A freely designed 15-minute workout using four items.
Harder
The workout must include a three-week progression and a specific method (circuit, EMOM, or sets).
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group designs the workout to be done seated, with bottles as weights.
- Shy students: they can choose not to lead and be the group's writer instead.
- Lower fitness level: suggest the 10-minute version with longer rests.
Learning goals
- Plan a full workout to train independently outside of school.
- Use everyday items safely as training equipment.
- Improve a plan based on feedback from classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- recycled bottles: 25
- towels: 9
- chairs: 9
- backpacks: 9
- recording cards: 9
Teacher tip
Ask for the items ahead of time and fill the bottles with water or sand so they have some weight. At the end, snap a photo of each card to build a class workout bank.
