Hill Repeats with Jog-Down Recovery
Running reps of 20 to 30 seconds up a gentle slope on school grounds, jogging back down to recover. It builds leg strength, aerobic power, and running technique with a strong arm drive and knee lift.
How to play
- Pick a gentle, obstacle-free slope (ramp, grassy hill, or campus driveway) and use cones to mark the start and three finish markers at different heights (2 min of explanation).
- Technique (3 min): two easy runs up focusing on a slight forward lean, strong arm drive, and landing on the balls of the feet.
- Groups of 5 in waves: on the whistle, the first wave runs up for 25 seconds trying to reach their marker; they jog down and the next wave goes.
- Each student completes 8 reps (about 12 min). Students choose the marker they can reach on every rep.
- Wrap-up (5 min): easy jog on flat ground and a partner chat about which rep their form started to break down.
Rules
- Always jog down, on a different side from the uphill lane.
- If the surface is wet or slippery, switch to the flat-ground version.
- If you miss your marker twice in a row, move down a marker instead of forcing your form.
Variations
Easier
15-second runs and 6 reps.
Standard
Eight 25-second hill runs with a jog down.
Harder
Ten reps, with the last two all-out from a crouched start.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: wheelchair pushes up the school ramp with a partner alongside on the way down.
- Hearing impairment: start each wave by dropping an arm in addition to the whistle.
- Lower fitness level: power-walk up and walk down.
Learning goals
- Build leg strength through uphill running.
- Maintain running form during short, intense efforts.
- Choose a personal load they can sustain on every rep.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 8
- whistle: 1
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
If there is no slope, use the bleachers or outdoor stairs instead. Stand at the top so you can see technique and make sure the way down is clear.
