High-Five Partner Fitness Series
A series of partner exercises where every rep ends with a high five: face-to-face push-ups, mirror squats, feet-together sit-ups and plank taps. Students build muscular endurance, timing with a partner and a positive class climate.
How to play
- Pair students of similar ability; review all four exercises with a model pair (3 min).
- Exercise 1 (3 min): face-to-face push-ups; at the top, high-five right hand, then left. Three 30-second sets.
- Exercise 2 (3 min): facing squats with a double high five overhead on the way up. Three 30-second sets.
- Exercise 3 (3 min): sit-ups with feet touching; high-five in the middle at the top. Three 30-second sets.
- Exercise 4 (3 min): face-to-face plank with alternating hand slaps, keeping the hips square. Three 30-second sets.
- Wrap-up (3 min): each pair picks its favorite exercise and repeats it for one minute, counting high fives.
Rules
- High fives are gentle and at shoulder height.
- Speak up before changing pace so your partner does not lose balance.
- In the plank, keep hips level; if they sag, drop to the knees.
- Rest 20 seconds between sets.
Variations
Easier
Do knee push-ups and sit-ups with arms crossed.
Standard
Four exercises, three 30-second sets each.
Harder
Link all four exercises without rest and repeat the cycle twice.
Adaptations
- For limited mobility, use seated versions: arm raises and trunk twists with high fives.
- For students uncomfortable with touch, replace the slap with an air high five a few inches away.
- Students with lower fitness do 20-second sets.
Learning goals
- Keep in sync with a partner on every rep.
- Improve trunk, arm and leg muscular endurance.
- Build a supportive atmosphere during hard effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 13
Teacher tip
Play upbeat music and rotate partners between exercises if the class can handle it. Watch the plank: many students rotate their hips when lifting a hand.
