Hidden Story Sentence Relay
In relay style, each team collects face-down words hidden around the playground, puts them in order to rebuild a sentence from a well-known story, and acts it out as a group pose. Students practice running, teamwork, and linking movement with reading for World Book Day.
How to play
- Before class, write 5 story sentences (8-10 words), one word per card and one color per sentence. Scatter them face down 50-65 ft from the start.
- Form 5 teams of 5, each with a color and a hoop at its start line. Explain that runners may pick up only one card of their color per trip (2 min).
- On the whistle, the first runner finds a card of their color, brings it to the hoop, and high-fives the next runner.
- Once the team has all its words, they lay them out on the floor in order to build the sentence. When they think they have it, they read it aloud to the teacher (8 min).
- With the correct sentence, the team creates a 5-second frozen pose showing that scene from the story and presents it to the class.
- Teams swap colors and repeat with a new sentence and a new way of traveling: hopping, lunging, or sliding (10 min).
Rules
- One card per trip, and only your team's color.
- Do not touch or move cards of other colors.
- Keep your head up in the search area, which is full of classmates.
- Everyone helps put the words in order, and the whole team reads the sentence.
Variations
Easier
Five-word sentences, with each team's cards placed in a single row.
Standard
Sentences of 8-10 words scattered across the whole playground.
Harder
Mix two sentences in the same color: the team must separate them and name both stories.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair searches a closer area and is the one who puts the words in order at the hoop.
- Reading difficulties: use large print and picture symbols next to key words.
- Visual impairment: use large, high-contrast cards and a guide partner during the search.
Learning goals
- Coordinate team effort to complete a shared task.
- Move quickly and carefully in a shared space.
- Connect physical activity with reading and stories.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 50
- cones: 5
- hoops: 5
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards if the playground is damp and put a small weight on each one if it is windy. Choose a mix of stories from different cultures so not every sentence is one students already know by heart.
