Help and X-Out Rotation After the Kick-Out
Man-to-man defense in 4-on-4 where, after helping on a drive, the weak-side defenders rotate in an X to cover the open shooter and the opposite player. Students understand defense as a system where every help requires a coordinated recovery.
How to play
- Draw ball-you-man positioning and the X-out rotation on the whiteboard: the defender closest to the rim helps, and the two on the weak side cross to cover the corner shooter and the wing (5 min).
- 4-on-4 at walking pace: the offense passes and drives as the teacher calls it, and the defense adjusts on each pass with one foot in the help line (6 min).
- 4-on-4 with a required drive from the wing and a kick-out to the weak side; the defense practices the X-out and earns a point if the shot is contested with a hand up (6 min).
- Live 4-on-4 in the half court: the offense must make three passes before shooting and the defense earns a point for every possession with no open shot; switch roles every four possessions (8 min).
Rules
- Defenders move and talk: “help,” “rotate,” “I've got ball.”
- The closeout ends with short steps and hands up, never jumping into the shooter.
- Attackers cannot drive at a closing defender before they have stopped.
- The 4-on-4 freezes on the teacher's signal so positions can be corrected.
Variations
Easier
The offense only passes from fixed spots and the defense adjusts on each pass.
Standard
X-out rotation after the kick-out plus 4-on-4 with a three-pass rule.
Harder
The offense can drive again after the kick-out, forcing a second rotation.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: voice calls are replaced by visual arm signals for help and rotation.
- Limited mobility: guards the low post, where movements are short.
- Autism: gets the whiteboard with the rotation drawn on it to check at each break.
Learning goals
- Understand help defense as a shared responsibility.
- Run the X-out rotation after a kick-out pass.
- Close out on the shooter in a controlled, safe way.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 6
- cones: 12
- pinnies: 14
Teacher tip
Freezing positions teaches the most: do it every two or three possessions. With 28 students, run three 4-on-4 games at three baskets and keep four rotating observers.
