Heats and Results: A Student-Run Sprint Meet
The class organizes and runs a 40-meter sprint meet from start to finish, with heats, semifinals and a final: clerk of the course, starter, timers, finish judges and records table. The teacher only supervises, and every student runs at least twice.
How to play
- Review roles and set up six 40-meter lanes with cones, a slowdown zone and a records table (5 min).
- The clerk of the course draws heats of six and gives each runner a pinny with their lane number (4 min).
- Qualifying heats with official starter commands, one timer per lane and finish judges who confirm the order (10 min).
- The records table enters the times and posts semifinals by time; students who don't qualify run a consolation heat (8 min).
- Final and announcement of results by the organizing team (5 min).
- The organizing team evaluates what worked and what they would change (3 min).
Rules
- The slowdown zone is at least 15 m long and nobody stands in it.
- A false start is called and rerun; on the second one, the runner starts one meter back.
- Organizing roles rotate so everyone gets to run.
- Finish judges' calls are respected, and the records table settles any doubts.
Variations
Easier
Only heats and a final, timing just the winner.
Standard
Heats, semifinals, consolation heat and final, all run by students.
Harder
Use phones for a photo finish and post results live on a screen.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as referee or records secretary and races in an adapted wheelchair heat.
- Hearing impairment: their heat starts with an arm drop and a light.
- Competition anxiety: may run an individual time trial with no one alongside.
Learning goals
- Organize and manage a track meet independently.
- Apply the basic rules of sprint races.
- Take on responsibilities and respect officials' decisions.

Teacher tip
Run a five-minute rehearsal with the starter and timers before starting. Consolation heats make sure nobody is left without a race after qualifying.
