Headstand with Two Spotters
A headstand progression with a triangle base, from tucked to straight legs, with a spotter on each side. Students develop inverted balance, core strength and weight distribution between hands and head.
How to play
- Groups of three on mats. Demonstrate the triangle in 3 minutes: hands shoulder-width apart and the forehead hairline about a hand's length in front, forming a triangle; most of the weight goes on the hands.
- Step 1 (3 minutes): set the triangle with knees down and walk the feet toward the face until the hips are over the head; hold 5 seconds.
- Step 2 (4 minutes): place the knees on the elbows in a tucked position, as in a tripod, with a spotter on each side.
- Step 3 (5 minutes): from the tuck, raise the legs slowly to vertical while each spotter holds one thigh; hold 3 to 5 seconds.
- Coming down: tuck the legs and place the feet on the floor, always the same way. Rotate all three roles after every two tries.
- Two-minute wrap-up: each student names the step where they feel confident.
Rules
- Students with neck or back problems skip the headstand and work on step 1 or a shoulder stand.
- Weight is shared and mostly on the hands, never only on the head.
- Spotters keep holding the thighs until the performer has tucked the legs.
- No one rolls forward out of the headstand without the teacher's OK.
Variations
Easier
Stay in the triangle with knees on elbows and a hip spot.
Standard
Rise to vertical with two spotters and hold 3 seconds.
Harder
Hold 5 seconds with one spotter and come down under control to a tuck.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: practice shifting weight onto the hands while seated and spot verbally.
- Autism or shyness: always work in the same group and call out each phase before doing it.
- Lower strength or fitness: stay with steps 1 and 2, which already train inverted balance.
Learning goals
- Perform a spotted inverted balance on head and hands.
- Distribute weight correctly to protect the neck.
- Spot a partner safely in an inverted balance.

Teacher tip
Check the triangle before every attempt: if the hands and head are in a straight line, the student will tip backward. Work away from walls and equipment.
