Handball: Slow the Fast Break and Recover into a 6-0
After a turnover, the attacker closest to the ball delays the opponent's outlet without fouling, while everyone else sprints back to set up a 6-0 defense. Students train the idea of "buying seconds" in handball transition defense.

How to play
- Quick explanation: who slows the ball (the player closest to it), who sprints to the middle of the area, and how the 6-0 forms from the inside out (3 min).
- 2v1 in half court: one defender delays the ball handler by stepping in front without contact, while a teammate sprints back from behind (7 min).
- 4v3+1 fast break: three defenders recover and one starts from the end line on the teacher's signal; a timekeeper clocks how long the defense takes to set (8 min).
- 6v6 game where, after each turnover, the team that lost the ball scores a point if it sets the 6-0 before the opponent's first shot (10 min).
- Review the recovery times and who slowed the ball best (2 min).
Rules
- Slowing the ball means stepping in front, never grabbing, pushing or getting under a jumping player.
- Recovering players run down the middle without cutting in front of anyone.
- All shots from outside the area.
- Never take out a shooter in the air.
Variations
Easier
The break can only dribble, no long passes.
Standard
Free fast break and a point for setting the 6-0 in time.
Harder
The 6-0 must be set within five seconds to earn the point.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: start each rep by dropping a cone or a pinnie.
- Students with a lower-body injury: time the recoveries and record them.
- Slower students: take the delaying role, which depends more on positioning than speed.
Learning goals
- Delay the opponent's break without fouling.
- Recover in an organized way and build a defensive system from the inside out.
- Defend safely, avoiding dangerous contact with shooters.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 4
- pinnies: 15
- cones: 10
- stopwatch: 2
Teacher tip
If you only have one goal, switch direction each round. The typical mistake is the delaying player going for the steal and getting beat; stress that their only job is to buy time.
