Handball: Attacking a 4-2 Defense with Two Forward Defenders
A 4-2 defense puts four defenders on the 6-meter line and two forward defenders out high to bother the shooters. Students learn to recognize it and attack it with fast ball movement, passes to the pivot behind the forward defenders and attacks into the space between the two lines.
How to play
- At the whiteboard, the teacher compares a 6-0 and a 4-2 and the group finds the gaps: between the forward defenders and on the wings (5 min).
- 4-2 defense at walking speed against six attackers passing the ball; the offense looks for the pass to the pivot slipping between the two lines (6 min).
- 6v6 at half speed with a target: a goal after a pass to the pivot or wing counts double (10 min).
- Timeout: each attacking team picks a play against the 4-2 and lays it out on the floor with cones (4 min).
- 6v6 game with a goalkeeper where the defense must stay in a 4-2; teams swap roles halfway (10 min).
Rules
- Forward defenders can't grab the shooter; they only cut passing lanes.
- The pivot doesn't push the defender to gain position.
- All shots are taken from outside the 6-meter area.
- The goalkeeper wears protection, or use soft balls.
Variations
Easier
The 4-2 plays passive, no interceptions.
Standard
Live defense and double goals for inside or wing passes.
Harder
The defense may switch from 4-2 to 6-0 mid-possession and the offense must spot it.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: use a ball with a bell during the walking phase, with a partner as a guide.
- Students with limited mobility: act as coach and design the timeout play.
- Students less confident shooting: play pivot or wing, where the shots are closer.
Learning goals
- Recognize the shape and gaps of a 4-2 defense.
- Use the pivot pass and quick ball movement to beat two defensive lines.
- Design a team solution against a specific system.

Teacher tip
If you don't have handball lines, mark the 6-meter area with a semicircle of cones. The typical mistake is shooting from far out without building the play; require at least three passes before a shot.
