Hand Shadow Puppets: Animals and Short Scenes
Students learn classic hand shadow figures, like the dog, the bird, and the rabbit, and then create a short scene with them in groups of three behind a lit-up screen. It builds fine motor skills, finger isolation, creativity, and coordination with classmates.
How to play
- Stretch the sheet or use a light wall, with the lamp 6 feet back, and dim half the lights.
- Teach four figures (5 min): rabbit, dog, bird with hooked thumbs, and snail. Everyone practices in place.
- In groups of three, 1-minute turns at the screen to see how the shadow changes closer to the light and how to move mouths and ears (4 min).
- Each group creates a 40-second scene with two or three animals: a meeting, a slow chase (4 min).
- Show (7 min): groups perform one after another while the rest sit, add sound effects, and finally pick the most recognizable figure.
Rules
- Only the performing group stands between the lamp and the screen.
- Nobody looks straight into the lamp or touches it, since it can be blinding and get hot.
- Safety: the lamp cord is taped to the floor and kept out of walkways.
Variations
Easier
Use only two easy figures, rabbit and bird, and perform in pairs.
Standard
Four figures and a 40-second scene in groups of three.
Harder
Invent a new figure using two people's hands at once and include it in the scene.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student performs seated with the screen or lamp adjusted to their height, and can make one-handed figures.
- Fine motor needs: simplified figures are fine, or the hand can be combined with a cardstock cut-out.
- Visual impairment: the student handles sound effects and character voices, and the group describes each figure to them.
Learning goals
- Control finger positions to make recognizable figures.
- Connect distance from the light with shadow size and sharpness.
- Create a short scene cooperatively with classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- lamp: 1
- white sheet: 1
Teacher tip
Figures look best with a relaxed hand about a foot from the screen; if the shadow is blurry, have students move closer to the sheet, not to the lamp.
