Group Riding: Single File and Hand Signals
On a closed course in the schoolyard, students practice group riding: riding single file at a safe gap, signaling turns and stops with their arms, and calling out hazards. It prepares them for real rides on bike lanes and paths.
How to play
- Spend 3 minutes on an ABC check (air, brakes, chain) and helmet fit for every bike; set up an oval cone course of about 150 m (165 yd) with two right-angle turns.
- Teach the signals: left arm straight out for a left turn, right arm out (or left arm bent up) for a right turn, arm down with palm back to slow or stop, and pointing at the ground for a hazard.
- Form groups of 5 riding single file two bike lengths apart; the lead rider signals and everyone passes the signal back (5 minutes).
- Scatter cones as "potholes": the leader points them out and the line steers around them without closing the gap (5 minutes).
- Rotate the leader each lap: the front rider pulls off to the right, lets the group pass and rejoins at the back (5 minutes).
- Finish with a 4-minute lap where the teacher calls surprise commands (turn, stop) and the line must respond with signals.
Rules
- Helmets are required and must be buckled.
- Keep at least two bike lengths from the rider ahead.
- No passing within the line except during the leader rotation.
- Use both brakes to stop and signal before slowing.
Variations
Easier
Practice the signals first while walking the bike, then while riding in a straight line.
Standard
Lines of 5 on a course with turns, hazards and leader rotation.
Harder
Ride two abreast and switch to single file on a signal at a narrow section.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: use an adaptive bike or trike, or participate by calling and grading signals from the center.
- Hearing impairment: give the surprise commands with bright colored flags.
- Little bike experience: start in a separate, slower line with a support partner.
Learning goals
- Ride in a group while keeping safe distances.
- Use proper hand signals for turns, stops and hazards.
- Anticipate and communicate hazards to the rest of the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bikes: 25
- helmets: 25
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Many students wobble when they take one hand off; practice one-handed riding in a straight line first. Ask families to check bikes at home the night before.
