Goalie Reflex Drill: Surprise Soft Balls
In groups of three, a goalie defends a cone goal against two throwers who hide the ball behind their backs and secretly decide who throws. Students work on reaction time, short lateral movements and anticipation.
How to play
- Make eight groups of three. Each sets up a 3-yard goal with two cones and a throwing line 5 yards away. Each thrower has a foam ball (2 min).
- The two throwers stand together with the ball behind the back. With a secret signal between them, only one throws, bouncing or rolling it toward the goal.
- The goalie, knees bent and hands out front, tries to stop it. Each save is a point. Ten throws, then rotate roles (6 min).
- Round 2: the goalie starts facing away and turns at "Go!"; the throw comes right as they turn (4 min).
- Round 3: both throw one second apart and the goalie tries to stop both (2 min).
- Count saves and discuss what clues they used to guess the thrower (1 min).
Rules
- Use foam balls only, thrown below the goalie's waist.
- Never throw at the face; if it happens, repeat with less force.
- Goalies do not dive; they shuffle and crouch only.
- Groups are 4 yards apart and all face the same way.
Variations
Easier
2-yard goal and rolled throws only from 6 yards.
Standard
3-yard goal at 5 yards with varied throws and three rounds.
Harder
4-yard goal or throws from 4 yards.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: in a wheelchair, the goal narrows to 5 feet and the student may block with a hoop.
- Shy students: group them with trusted classmates and keep scores private.
- Lower fitness: more rest between sets of throws.
Learning goals
- React to an unpredictable visual cue.
- Improve short lateral movements and the ready position.
- Throw with control and keep a partner safe.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 16
- cones: 24
Teacher tip
Throwers often give themselves away with their eyes, so encourage both to look at the center of the goal. Foam balls let students play without fear of being hit.
