Give-and-Go Wall Pass and Shoot
The attacker dribbles at a defender, passes to a support player, keeps running, and receives the return pass to shoot. Students learn the wall pass, or give-and-go, a basic combination for beating a defender with a pass and a run, and finish on goal.
How to play
- Set up 3 stations: a line of attackers 20 yards from a small goal, a tall cone 10 yards out acting as the defender, and a support player in a pinnie beside the cone.
- The attacker dribbles to 2 yards from the cone, passes on the ground to the support player, runs around the other side, and gets the ball back first time.
- Shoot within two touches; the shooter then becomes the support player, and the support player collects the ball and rejoins the line.
- After 5 minutes, move the support player to the other side to work both feet.
- For the next 5 minutes, a live defender replaces the cone and can only shuffle along a sideways line; the wall pass earns one point and the goal two.
- Finish with 5 minutes of open 2v1 at each station, using the give-and-go whenever possible.
Rules
- The next attacker goes only after the previous one has shot.
- The support player returns the ball on the ground and forward, into the attacker's running path.
- Shots are taken only from outside a 4-yard crease.
- Players waiting stay behind the start line, out of the line of fire.
Variations
Easier
The support player rolls the return pass by hand.
Standard
Wall pass and shoot in two touches, first against a cone and then against a sideways defender.
Harder
The defender moves freely and a second defender pressures the support player.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts as a fixed support player who receives and returns by hand, or does the give-and-go pushing a large ball.
- Autism: draw three chalk arrows on the ground so the path is visual.
- Skill level: less experienced players do the wall pass without shooting; stronger players return and shoot with the weaker foot.
Learning goals
- Complete a wall pass with a ground pass and an immediate run.
- Time the pass based on the distance to the defender.
- Finish with an accurate shot after the combination.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 9
- small goals: 3
- cones: 15
- pinnies: 3
Teacher tip
The key is to keep running right after passing: if the attacker stops to watch the pass, the give-and-go breaks down. Point the goals toward a fence.
