Get Three Stops 3-on-3
A half-court 3-on-3 game where the defensive team only gets to go on offense after earning three stops in a row playing man-to-man. It reinforces man-to-man defense, defensive talk, and shared responsibility for every possession.
How to play
- Form teams of three in pinnies with two teams per basket, and give each defender a fixed matchup of similar size and skill (2 min).
- Team A plays offense and team B defends man-to-man; a stop is a miss with a defensive rebound, a steal, a turnover, or 20 seconds without a shot.
- If the offense scores, the defense's stop count resets to zero and the offense keeps the ball.
- Once the defense gets three stops in a row, the teams switch roles and the defense earns a point.
- Play 6-minute blocks and change opponents between blocks, three blocks in all (18 min).
- Before each block, the defense calls out its matchups and one cue, such as help and recover.
Rules
- Each defender always guards their assigned player except for a quick help.
- Defenders must talk on every possession: ball, help, or switch.
- Safety: no blocking shots from behind and no seeking contact on rebounds.
- The defensive team counts its stops out loud.
Variations
Easier
Two stops in a row earn the switch, and the offense may dribble no more than four times.
Standard
Three straight man-to-man stops are needed to switch to offense.
Harder
Require four straight stops, and one must be a steal or a well-taken charge.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility runs the defense from the baseline calling help, and their team plays with a neutral extra player.
- Give shy students one specific word they must call out on each possession.
- Match defenders by fitness and allow matchup changes each block.
Learning goals
- Stay with an assigned player in man-to-man defense.
- Communicate on defense with short, clear words.
- Value defense as part of the team's success.

Teacher tip
This rule shifts the focus so defense becomes the path to offense, and students buy in quickly. If a team never gets three stops, drop it to two for that matchup for a while.
