Gesture Telephone: The Scene That Changes Down the Line
A body version of the telephone game: a silent scene passes from person to person and changes along the way. It builds observation, precise gestures, and nonverbal language with lots of humor and little exposure.
How to play
- Groups of 6 in a line, everyone facing away except the first person. The teacher explains how it works with a very short scene (3 min).
- The first person reads a card (pitching a tent, washing a dog, changing a tire) and acts it out in 15 seconds for the second person, who has turned around. That person passes it to the third, and so on to the end (5 min).
- The last person says out loud what they think they saw, and the first reads the card. Compare the first and last versions by performing them side by side (6 min).
- Precision round: the group agrees on three key gestures that must not get lost and tries again with a new card (4 min).
- Wrap-up: which gestures read best, and why do details get lost (2 min).
Rules
- Anyone waiting faces away and doesn't peek.
- No talking and no word sounds.
- Copy what you see, not what you imagine.
- Nobody laughs at the person who changed the scene: the changes are the fun of the game.
Variations
Easier
One-action scenes (sweeping, brushing teeth) and lines of 4.
Standard
Two- or three-action scenes and lines of 6.
Harder
10 seconds per handoff, and scenes with two characters that one person has to show.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: they go first and get the card read to them quietly, or receive the scene through touch on the hands if they agree.
- Hearing impairment: no change to the game is needed; give instructions in writing.
- Insecure students: they can stand in the middle of the line, where only one person is watching.
Learning goals
- Communicate an action with clear, recognizable gestures.
- Watch closely and reproduce accurately.
- Reflect on how information gets lost in communication.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scene cards: 12
Teacher tip
Prepare cards ahead of time with everyday actions and no trick ones. With 5 groups going at once it gets loud: have the last person in each line share their version one group at a time.
