Garden Hose Battle Rope: Wave Intervals
An old piece of garden hose filled with sand, or a thick rope, makes a low-cost battle rope. In pairs, students do intervals of waves, slams and circles, track intensity with heart rate and compare how demanding each pattern is.
How to play
- Set up the stations: loop each 8-10 m hose behind a staked pole or a goalpost so there are two ends of 4-5 m (3 min).
- Technique: athletic stance, knees bent, neutral back, with the movement coming from the shoulders and hips; practice alternating waves, double slams and outward circles (4 min).
- Block 1, in pairs: 20 seconds of alternating waves and 40 seconds of rest while the partner counts; six sets each, taking turns (12 min).
- Block 2: one 30-second effort with the pattern of each student's choice, taking the pulse right after (3 min).
- Each student writes on the sheet which pattern raised their heart rate most and their Borg, and the class discusses why this tool trains arm strength and endurance at the same time (3 min).
Rules
- The hose must be firmly anchored and the ends taped shut so sand doesn't leak out.
- Leave at least 10 feet between stations so the waves don't hit anyone.
- If the shoulder or lower back hurts, make smaller waves or work kneeling.
- The resting partner stands behind, never beside the hose.
Variations
Easier
15-second sets with 45 seconds of rest, alternating waves only.
Standard
Six 20/40 sets of alternating waves and a final 30-second effort with a pattern of choice.
Harder
30/30 sets combining waves with a squat or lunge in the same interval.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: works seated in the wheelchair with a shorter hose, doing arm waves and circles.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the partner signals start and stop with a tap on the shoulder or a visual cue.
- Low fitness level: uses a lighter rope or the hose without sand and takes longer rests.
Learning goals
- Do full-body interval training with recycled equipment.
- Compare the cardiovascular demand of different movement patterns.
- Keep a safe posture during hard upper-body efforts.
Equipment for a class of 25
- garden hoses: 6
- poles: 6
- timer: 1
- log sheets: 30
Teacher tip
Old hoses are free from gardens or the school maintenance crew; a bit of sand adds weight without making them stiff. Six hoses are enough for 12 pairs taking turns.
