Gaelic Football Toe-Lift Pickup Game
In Gaelic football you may not pick up a ball on the ground with your hands; you have to lift it with your toe. This progression teaches the toe lift and then uses it in a keep-away game where every loose ball has to be picked up with the foot.
How to play
- Each student has a ball in a large open area. Demonstrate: slide the toe under the ball, give it a short flick upward, and catch it at waist height.
- Solo practice (4 min): first with a stationary ball, then rolling it out yourself and picking it up on the move. Count your pickups in 1 minute.
- Partners (4 min): A rolls the ball to B, who runs onto it, lifts it with the toe, and returns it with a hand pass (strike with the palm).
- 5v5 keep-away (10 min) on a 65 x 50 ft area with pinnies: string together 5 hand passes to score 1 point.
- If the ball hits the ground, anyone may win it, but only by lifting it with the foot; if someone picks it up by hand, the other team gets the ball.
- Waiting teams act as line judges and rotate in every 3 minutes.
Rules
- No diving for the ball: always pick it up on your feet.
- If two players arrive together, the ball belongs to whoever touched it first with the foot; nobody kicks a ball someone else is already lifting.
- No contact: do not take the ball out of someone's hands.
- You may take only 4 steps with the ball in hand before passing.
Variations
Easier
The ball may bounce once and be caught off the bounce.
Standard
Toe lift required and 5 hand passes to score.
Harder
Pickups must be made at full speed without stopping, and a point requires 4 different players to touch the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student may pick up by hand after one bounce and makes hand passes from a set zone.
- Autism: preview the key rule with a picture and keep the same team for the whole game.
- Lower skill: use a bigger, softer ball and practice the lift on a stationary ball.
Learning goals
- Lift the ball off the ground with the foot and catch it while staying balanced.
- Link the pickup to a quick hand pass.
- Accept and apply a rule that differs from other familiar sports.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 25
- cones: 12
- pinnies: 13
Teacher tip
Remind students the foot slides under the ball rather than kicking it; if the ball flies away, the flick is too hard. Use soft balls so toes do not get sore.
