Gaelic Football: Solo, Bounce, and Hand Pass Game
An introduction to Irish Gaelic football, which mixes hand and foot play: players advance with the 'solo' (dropping the ball onto the foot and kicking it back to the hands), alternating bounces, and the hand pass struck with a fist. Students work on hand-eye and foot-eye coordination and learn a sport from another culture.
How to play
- Place a team handball goal at each end of a 40 x 25 m field and attach a vertical pole to each goalpost to mark the scoring area above the crossbar; make teams of 6 (3 min).
- Partner technique: every 4 steps with the ball you must bounce or solo it; no two bounces in a row (5 min).
- Hand pass: hold the ball in one hand and strike it with the fist or palm of the other; passes 6-8 m on the run (4 min).
- 6-on-6 game: a goal kicked under the crossbar is 3 points; a ball over the crossbar between the poles, by foot or hand pass, is 1 point (11 min).
- Wrap-up: briefly explain the game's Irish roots and ask which skill was hardest (2 min).
Rules
- No throwing: the hand pass is struck with the fist or palm.
- To win the ball you may only slap it away, never grab or push the carrier.
- No picking up the ball off the ground with your hands; lift it with your foot.
- The goalie may handle the ball only inside the marked goal area.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces in a row and make the solo optional.
Standard
Bounce or solo every 4 steps, no consecutive bounces, and 3-point and 1-point scores.
Harder
1-point scores count only by foot, and every attack must include a hand pass.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play as a neutral hand-pass player in a protected zone and score from there.
- Hearing impairment: the official signals a steps violation by holding up four fingers.
- Fitness level: free subs every 3 minutes and a shorter field for students who need it.
Learning goals
- Perform the solo, bounce, and hand pass on the run.
- Apply the basic scoring rules of Gaelic football.
- Appreciate a traditional sport from another culture.

Teacher tip
The solo is tricky at first; start at a walk and drop the ball from waist height. Fasten the poles securely to the goalposts so they don't fall.
