Futsal Wing Play: Line Pass and Diagonal
A classic futsal wing pattern: the winger plays a line pass straight down the sideline and the teammate answers with a diagonal ball inside for a first-time finish. Students work on driven ground passes, runs in behind and finishing against a goalie.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): on each half court, two lines on the sideline at midcourt, a goalie and cones 3 yd in from the sideline marking the channel.
- Unopposed (4 min): A plays a line pass down the channel; B runs in behind, takes a directional first touch and plays a diagonal ground pass to the penalty spot, where A arrives to shoot.
- Rotation (3 min): A joins B's line and B joins A's; halfway through, attack down the other wing so students use the other foot.
- Passive defender (4 min): one defender steps out from the middle and may only block the diagonal with the body, no tackling; attackers adjust the timing of the pass.
- 3v2 plus goalie (5 min): two wingers and a pivot against two defenders; a goal is worth double if it comes from a line pass and diagonal. If the defense steals, it scores in a cone mini-goal.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each pair explains when the diagonal was right and when to just shoot.
Rules
- The line pass must stay inside the cone channel; if it leaves, repeat it.
- Students waiting stand off the court, away from shots.
- No one shoots while the goalie is collecting a ball or is on the ground.
- Switch goalies every 3 minutes.
Variations
Easier
Play with no defender and allow a sole-of-the-foot trap before the diagonal.
Standard
Line pass, diagonal and finish against a passive defender, then 3v2.
Harder
Two touches max for everyone, and the finish must be one-touch.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: fixed passer on the wing, throwing or rolling the ball.
- Hearing impairment or autism: show the pattern with numbered colored cones and keep the same partner for the whole task.
- Lower skill level: shorten the line pass to 6 yd and allow a control touch before the diagonal.
Learning goals
- Play an accurate line pass and a driven diagonal ground pass.
- Time a run in behind to attack open space.
- Choose between passing and shooting based on where the defender is.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal ball: 12
- goals: 2
- cones: 12
- pinnies: 6
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is playing the diagonal backward: ask for the pass into space ahead of the shooter. Use bright cones for the channel.
