Futsal: Student Coach Runs the Rolling Subs
A futsal game with 7- or 8-player rosters where a student coach plans the rolling substitutions, splits up the minutes and makes adjustments based on the score. It builds leadership, effort management and fair playing time for everyone.
How to play
- Split the class into two rosters of 8 (4 on the court, a goalkeeper and 3 subs) plus a third group of referees and scorekeepers; each roster picks a coach who doesn't play.
- Planning (4 min): the coach fills out a sheet with two lines and a sub order so everyone plays at least 8 minutes.
- Play 2 halves of 10 minutes; subs are rolling, through a marked substitution zone on the sideline, without stopping play.
- The scorekeeper records each player's minutes and goals on the observation checklist; at halftime (2 min) the coach checks the sheet and fixes it if anyone hasn't played enough.
- In the second half, each coach can call one 1-minute timeout to make a tactical change (more pressure, dropping back on defense).
Rules
- The incoming player can't step on the court until the teammate exits through the sub zone; otherwise it's a foul.
- No one plays more than 5 minutes in a row without a rest.
- No slide tackles or dangerous play near the substitution zone.
Variations
Easier
Subs happen with play stopped every 3 minutes on the teacher's signal.
Standard
Rolling subs planned by the student coach, with a minutes sheet and a timeout.
Harder
The coach has to use a different plan depending on whether the team is winning or losing and justify it in writing at the end.
Adaptations
- A student with limited mobility can be the coach or the official minutes keeper.
- For shy students, the coach can work with an assistant coach and share the tasks.
- Plan shorter shifts for students with lower fitness; it's a great chance to talk about pacing effort.
Learning goals
- Plan and carry out a fair, effective player rotation.
- Make tactical decisions as a coach as the game unfolds.
- Give instructions with respect and positive leadership.

Teacher tip
Student coaches tend to keep the best players on the court, so check the sheet at halftime and enforce the minimum minutes. Mark the sub zone clearly with cones to prevent collisions.
