Futsal Pivot Play: Back to Goal
A 3v2 plus goalkeeper attack on a half court where the pivot receives with their back to goal, shields the ball, and chooses between laying it off to a wing or turning to shoot. Students practice shielding, support play, and reading the defense.
How to play
- Use two half courts, each with a goal and goalkeeper. On each one, groups of 5: a pivot 8 yards from goal, two wings spread wide at 12 yards, and two defenders, one guarding the pivot from behind.
- Step 1 (4 min): a wing passes to the pivot, who shields the ball for 2 seconds and lays it off to the other wing for a shot; the defender pressures without stealing.
- Step 2 (10 min): live 3v2 plus goalkeeper. The pivot decides: if the defender is tight, lay it off; if the defender gives space, turn and shoot.
- Scoring: a goal after the pivot touches the ball is worth 2 points; a goal without the pivot is worth 1. Roles rotate every three attacks.
- Wrap-up (3 min): What clues from the defender tell you it is safe to turn?
Rules
- The pivot shields with the body and arms out without pushing; the defender may not hold or push from behind.
- Each attack lasts no more than 10 seconds.
- Only one group attacks at a time; the next group waits off the court.
Variations
Easier
The pivot's defender stays passive and the pivot may take three touches.
Standard
3v2 plus goalkeeper with live defense and 2-point goals after a pivot touch.
Harder
Play 3v3, and the pivot may take only two touches before laying off or shooting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a fixed wing with extra time to pass and shoot.
- Autism: give short instructions with a single decision cue, such as if they touch you, lay it off.
- Lower fitness: the student plays goalkeeper every other round.
Learning goals
- Shield the ball with your back to goal using your body.
- Decide between laying off and turning based on the defender's position.
- Provide support on the wings to keep the attack going.
Equipment for a class of 25

- goals: 2
- pinnies (two colors): 12

Teacher tip
Correct pivots who stand up straight: they should bend their knees and spread their arms without pushing. Watch that defenders do not hack from behind when trying to steal.
