Futsal Goalie Throw-Outs to a Running Winger
A transition game where the goalie catches the ball and throws it out to a winger on the run, who finishes at the other goal. Students work on the goalie's throw-out, runs into space and quick counterattacks.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): full court, a goalie in each goal and two lines of wingers on each sideline near the end line; hoops on the floor as targets along the wings in the opponent's half.
- Throw-out technique (3 min): the goalie throws, rolled or overhand, to a hoop where the winger must receive on the run; 1 point for every ball received inside the hoop.
- 1v0 counter (4 min): the teacher takes a soft shot, the goalie catches it and throws to the winger, who dribbles and shoots at the far goal in under 6 seconds.
- 2v1 counter (5 min): one winger from each sideline and one defender from midcourt go; the goalie chooses who to throw to based on who's open.
- Rotation: after each rep, wingers switch lines and the defender joins a winger line; goalies switch every 4 minutes.
- Wrap-up (4 min): goalie pairs contest: ten throw-outs each, most hoops hit wins.
Rules
- The goalie releases within 4 seconds of catching the ball, just like the official rule.
- Never throw at a teammate's head.
- Lines wait off the court by the end line.
- Shoot only when the goalie is set.
Variations
Easier
The throw-out is rolled and the winger receives standing inside the hoop.
Standard
Throw-outs on the run and a 2v1 counter with the goalie choosing.
Harder
Add a second defender who starts late, and throw-outs must be overhand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays goalie in a smaller goal or throws from a fixed zone.
- Hearing impairment: signal the start by raising a colored hoop instead of using the whistle.
- Lower skill level: place the hoops 8 yd from the goalie and allow one bounce before the catch.
Learning goals
- Make accurate rolled and overhand throw-outs.
- Get open in space to receive on the run.
- Launch quick counterattacks after winning the ball.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal ball: 8
- goals: 2
- cones: 8
- hoops: 6
Teacher tip
Many goalies watch the ball and not their teammates: ask them to scan before the catch. Rotate every student through the goal so they all understand the goalie's role in starting the attack.
