Futsal: Freeze the Play and Coach on the Spot
Live feedback in futsal games: one student coach per team may shout “Freeze!” once every two minutes; everyone stops, the coach places one or two players where they should be and explains why in 20 seconds. Play then restarts from that point to check whether the correction works.
How to play
- Explain the procedure: shout freeze, everyone stops, 20 seconds of explanation at most, one concept only, and restart from where the ball is (3 min).
- On each court assign one coach per team with a unit concept on their card: support, breaking runs or defensive shifting (2 min).
- Game 1 lasts 7 minutes with freezes; the teacher signals every two minutes when a freeze becomes available again (7 min).
- Rotate coaches and concepts and play game 2 for 7 minutes (8 min).
- Each coach notes which freeze had an effect on the next play, and players say which correction helped them most (4 min).
- Short final 4-minute game without freezes to see if the corrections stick (4 min).
Rules
- When you hear “Freeze!” stop right away but without sudden braking; if you are at full speed, finish your step.
- The coach speaks positively and to the player, not to the audience.
- A player is only moved if they agree; otherwise the coach points instead.
- You may not freeze in the last second of an opponent's scoring play to cancel it.
Variations
Easier
The teacher calls the freeze and the coach only explains.
Standard
One coach per team freezes play once every two minutes and corrects on the court.
Harder
The coach may not explain and must ask players where they should be.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: coaches for the whole game or plays as a fixed pivot in a protected zone.
- Hearing impairment: the freeze comes with a visual signal of crossed arms and a raised pinnie.
- Autism: is told in advance there will be sudden stops and is offered the role of tracking freeze timing.
Learning goals
- Give short, usable tactical feedback at the moment of the action.
- Understand how space is occupied on offense and defense.
- Accept and apply corrections from a classmate.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 3
- pinnies: 15
- cones: 12
- whistles: 3
Teacher tip
Enforce the 20-second limit strictly: if the coach goes on too long, the game loses its flow. It is a great chance for students who do not stand out as players to show their tactical reading.
