Futsal Diamond Defense 4v4 with Cover
A 4v4 game with goalies where the defending team sets up in a diamond (last defender, two wings and a pivot) and practices pressuring the ball with cover behind. Students work on zone defense, communication and help defense.
How to play
- Setup (2 min): four teams of 5 (4 plus a goalie) on two half courts; each team lines up in a diamond and everyone knows if they're the last defender, a wing or the pivot.
- Walk-through (4 min): the teacher carries a ball around the court and the diamond shifts; the closest player pressures and the others close the inside pass.
- 4v4 with one ball (6 min): free attack; when the closest defender pressures and another covers 2 yd behind on the diagonal, the teacher awards 1 defense point even if there's a goal.
- Role swap (2 min): rotate positions inside the diamond so everyone plays last defender at least once.
- Game (6 min): a goal is 1 point; winning the ball in the opponent's half with an organized press is 1 point; the resting team keeps track of defense points.
- Wrap-up (2 min): each team says who talked most on defense and which keyword they used.
Rules
- Challenge for the ball only from the front or the side; no slide tackles.
- The last defender must talk loudly to organize the cover.
- Goalies stay in their area and don't come out to clear with their feet.
- Switch goalies every 3 minutes.
Variations
Easier
Play 4v3 in favor of the defense so the diamond can coordinate under less pressure.
Standard
A 4v4 game with defense points for pressure and cover.
Harder
The offense gets a neutral player and the defense must defend 4v5.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays last defender in a marked zone near the goal or acts as the coach calling out the diamond's moves.
- Autism or shyness: always gets the same position and a fixed keyword to communicate.
- Lower fitness: takes 1-minute active breaks as scorekeeper when needed.
Learning goals
- Organize a diamond defense with pressure and cover.
- Call out help and switches loudly.
- Value team defensive effort as much as scoring goals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal ball: 4
- goals: 4
- pinnies: 20
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is all four chasing the ball: freeze the game and ask who should have stayed back to cover. Give the last defender a different-colored pinnie so everyone sees who's in charge.
